Hi All

Just letting you know how we are doing this week and what's been happening. Well the donations towards the hospital bill is still coming in; another $1 300 this week so we're down to just $11 700. A new good friend has kindly bought me A LOT of groceries on Saturday, just want to say thanks again, it made a huge difference! Kris's first tooth is coming through nicely now and he's standing against everything! He is still busy with his leopard crawl but instead of going on a normal crawl he now wheelbarrows! Hands and feet flat on the floor and bum in the air! I think he's going to be a comedian, he's such a funny little bloke! He's still tired a lot, I just hope it's the teething and not his heart. Keep praying for us!

Our preparations for the African Day is going well and we hope those able to attend will be there! We've also been approached by a migration agent who is willing to do our visa application for free but we still need the application fee.

Our fund raising goal at the moment is $18 000 which includes our hospital bill, the rental van accident and our visa application fee. I hope that the bulk of this will be raised on the African Day and on the day planned for in Toowoomba.

We really would like to raise this money before Christmas and Kris's first birthday. How great will it be to have a fresh start in the New Year knowing we can apply for our Permanent Residency and not worrying about going back to South Africa.

Thank you again to all the wonderfull donations we have received, all the hampers and vouchers for the day! You are all so wonderfull and I am so glad that you have reached out to us when we were in need!

Hi All

Please read this very sad story below, and if you can in any little way help these poor people, please do so.  This request was posted on the SAAustralia forum and my immediate reaction was “someone else out with their begging bowl”, but then I thought about what it must be like to be 25 years old living in a strange country with a prem baby with health issues, financial difficulties and an uncertain future!   I guess if I was in such a desperate situation I would turn to anyone and everyone for help!  What really threw me was when I realised that she actually lives in Toowoomba!!

I will be getting in touch with this girl asap but just want to see if any of you would like to pass on a little something to someone who needs help!  If you know of any organisations or church groups or friends who may be in a position to help, please pass on the information too!  I really never get involved in asking people to help someone else, but for some reason this sad situation has touched my heart, and I hope may touch yours too.

Regards

Eva

Request 1: Oct2010 (updated 3/11/10)

Hi, there, my name is Carolien Dreyer, I grew up in Heidelberg Transvaal and lived in Pretoria before we came over in January 2009. Been married for 3years and is 25 years old. My husband's name is Philip and he is a qualified butcher.

Our first sponsors was Oakey Abattoir, but things went sour pretty quickly and we got a sponsor to another company for St. George which is about 4hours away.

We moved ourselves in a rental van(panel van) while I was about 7months pregnant. On our second trip with the van, I decided to just quickly go to the hospital after we've unloaded the van just to make sure everything was still ok with bub, because I wasn't sure if I was too busy packing to notice if he wasn't moving as much as he should or if something was wrong. Up until that time I did go to a obstetrician(gynecologist) and my previous big scan at 20weeks was fine.

Went to the hospital at about 5pm Saturday the 19th December and they said that they would have the monitor on me for 20mins to check everything. It was such a relieve to hear my baby's heart beat a nice 120bpm and I was just relaxing, thinking I was over reacting when suddenly the heart machine slowed down to 60bpm.

The midwife helped me sit up a bit and made bub move and it went back up to 120bpm. At first they thought he might be lying on the cord but it kept happening no matter the position I lay in. The doctor was called in and he said that it was very concerning that the heart rate dropped but even more concerning was the fact that the heart rate just made a steady line at 120bpm not varying between 120 to 160bpm. He made a lot of calls trying to find a big enough hospital that would take me at 32weeks. and finally at 10pm got the Brisbane Mater to take me and the plane came at 12.15 that night. They eventually had to turn me away so that I could not look at the machine to see when my baby's heart rate fell.

We arrived in Brisbane at 2am and they wanted to check first if they could leave me to morning before calling in the head obstetrician, but doing the sonar/ultrasound, showed them that the blood was moving out, but not so much back in to baby. Then everything became a blur. A lot of people rushed in, and I was being operated on in 10min. They told us they would show me my baby when he came out but when they saw how small he was he immediately rushed him away, but he screamed! Oh what a beautiful sound! I only got to see him an hour later but he was so small, only 1,210kg and 37cm. He had stop growing for I don't know how long and had started using his own body's sugar to survive. I'm still mad at the obstetrician for not picking it up! My baby could have died!

The first 3days was a little tricky but he's a little fighter and he pulled through. Some friends came to get my husband and take him back to St. George to get the rental van and give it back, on his way back, he had an accident with a kangaroo and the company immediately took a $1000 from our debit card. The first worries started when the hospitals admin called me and said that our health fund said the are not going to pay out because we weren't a year on the fund yet, so we had to fill in a lot of forms and show evidence that it was an emergency, eventually they decided to pay, but at that stage we weren't aware of there 20days annual limit.

We spent our Christmas in the Ronald Mcdonald house, but after a few days we didn't have any more money to stay and had to go home. That was one of the hardest days in my life!

Leaving that tiny little thing to go home more than 500km away. He was Transferred to Toowoomba BaseHospital and my mother got together a few dollors to send over to me and I was able to go to him. Luckily we had some friends over there who I could stay with, but Philip had to stay behind and work, and because we only had one car he had to walk to work.

My baby grew a little bigger every day and on the 5th of February 2010 weighing 2,140kg and after 47 days in hospital we were allowed to take him home. I was so tired, for a week I just slept with the baby, getting up when he was hungry, eating and going back to sleep. In April the first bills came, at first it was $30 100 for Toowoomba base because the fund only paid for 20 days. I contacted a government agency that investigates private health funds and she found that they should have paid another 10days because his hospitalization fell over 2 years. We were a little relaxed under the impression that our employers were liable for our baby's health expenses but unfortunately that is not the case because he was born after September 09 he is under the new visa conditions. We also got a lot of other small bills $200/$300 each for other medical expenses, blood work etc that the health fund did not cover. But then we also got the legal letter from the rental company that we owe them $2548 for damages. We were in total shock.

In August my husband got a transfer back to Toowoomba in the hope that I could get a job again. In the first week back in Toowoomba, I noticed Kris's hands turning purple. We took him to E.R and while the Dr was evaluating him his heart rate jumped to 200bpm without any reason. The kept him there and on the 2nd day got a holter monitor on him to see what his heart does over 24hrs. The saw that it would speed up anytime to well over 200bpm without it looking as if there was anything wrong with him. What they could tell me was that everything was definitely not right and that it does show that it's in the lower areas of the heart and I will be referred to a cardiologist, it's been more than a month and I'm still waiting for my appointment. Keep calling but they'll let me know when one comes along. Just hoping and praying that it is nothing serious.

We would really like it to be able to apply for permanent residency, but our funds are non existing at the moment and we really want to raise some funds for Kris's past and present health expenses.

I've heard that there is about half a million South Africans in Australia, if only a small percentage of that is able to give $10 we would very quickly be able to raise money for Kris's expenses.

So please forward my details to your friends and help us out!
